Two calculators and a readiness check

Which deductible costs you less across a year, which of two quotes is genuinely cheaper once fees are included, and whether you have everything an insurer will ask for.

Deductible vs premium scenario

Find the point where a cheaper premium stops being cheaper.

Assumptions this uses
  • Both options are assumed to cover the same things — if they do not, this comparison does not hold.
  • The deductible is assumed to apply once per claim.
  • Premiums are treated as fixed for the year; a claim may change your renewal price.
  • No fees, taxes or instalment charges are included.

Limitations: this does not account for how a claim affects your future premium, for differences in policy wording, or for any coverage limit other than the deductible.

Before you quote

Set the deductible you could actually pay

Decide the figure you could hand over tomorrow without borrowing, then treat that as your ceiling. A deductible you cannot cover turns an insured event into a debt problem. Collision and comprehensive are set separately — comprehensive claims tend to be smaller, which is an argument for keeping that one lower.

True annual cost of two quotes

Two quotes side by side on total annual cost, including the fees the monthly figure hides.

Assumptions this uses
  • Both quotes are assumed to be for identical coverage, limits and deductibles.
  • Fees include instalment charges, policy fees and any payment charges you would actually pay.
  • The five-year figure assumes the difference stays the same, which it will not exactly.

Limitations: this compares price only. It cannot tell you how either insurer handles a claim, which is where the value of the policy is actually delivered.

Quote-preparation checklist

The details every insurer asks for. Gather them once and every quote is comparable.

Assumptions this uses
  • This reflects the information most US insurers request at quote stage.
  • Requirements vary by insurer and by state.

Limitations: a checklist prepares your questions and makes your quotes comparable. It does not price a policy or tell you what cover you need.
